People are often perplexed by the terms lesbian, gay, pansexual, transgender, queer and the related acronym LGBTQIA+.  The tracking definitions will support you to know these terms.

LGBTQIA+: The first four letters of this accepted abbreviation are “Lesbian, male lover, bisexual and transgender.” The letter Q can stand for “questioning” -- as in still exploring one’s sexuality -- or “queer,” or sometimes both. LGBTQ+ people have always existed, even if the language seems new. Conversations around sexual orientation and gender are nuanced -- and the "alphabet," if you will, is expanding.

"L" stands for Lesbian: A woman emotionally, romantically or sexually attracted to other women.

"G" stands for Gay: Used to describe men attracted to the alike sex OR anyone attracted to the same or similar genders.

"B" stands for Bisexual: People attracted to more than one gender.

"T" stands for Transgender: Those whose gender persona and/or expression differs from cultural expectations. Being non-binary does not imply any specific sexual orientation. Some non-binary people identify as trans, while others complete not.

"Q" has two meanings. First, queer, a catch-all to include those who do not identify as exclusively straight and/or folks who have non-binary or gender-fluid identities. Queer was once used as a slur but has been reclaimed by some in the community. "Q" can also stand for those, questioning their identity.

What Does LGBTQIA+ Mean?

For many years, the umbrella term “gay” was used to describe the community. 

Now, many people worry about how to come out, but coming out before the 1970s wasn’t even an option, as many states illegalized what they called “homosexuality” or “sodomy.” There was also no acronym at all, restricting the inclusivity of our community.

Once an acronym appeared, all versions of it began with “L” – for an important reason. 

In the early days of the gay rights movement, the lesbian community often felt dismissed or

LGBTQ+ stands for lesbian, homosexual, bisexual, transgender, queer, plus other sexual orientations and gender identities.

There are many ways you may watch this written, but the most common are currently LGBTQ+ or LGBTQIAP+.

The Government estimates 3.9 million people or 6% of the population identify as woman loving woman, gay or bi in the UK. It is estimated that 650,000 people, or 1% of the population, identify as transitioned in Great Britain. However, it is likely that the true numbers are far greater than this, as many are not yet comfortable being clear about their sexuality and gender identity.

For those who have had very petty interaction with the group, you may not perceive what a lot of these sexual orientations and gender identities are or mean, so let's aim to help you understand.

There are a multitude of people that make up the LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit community.

In reality, there are over 15,000 adults in Wyoming who spot as something other than cisgender, heterosexual, or straight. We recognize that tracking each part of the acronym can earn a bit confusing, so we are hoping to tighten up a scant of the details. Let’s talk about what LGBTQ+ and Two Spirit represent , and dive into what each letter stands for. 

Keep in mind this is just a broad definition, and it may vary between person to person. Each person's self is something they hold tightly, and shouldn’t be assumed. Don't hesitate to take the time to get to recognize people and ask questions.
