Welcome to a novel Wildcard Wednesday! This week, I’ve got another Sitcom Potpourri, where I briefly discuss several of the short-lived comedies I won’t have a chance to highlight in full — offering casual commentary that culminates in the selection of an episode (or episodes) that I think finest represents each series at large, based on what I’ve seen. For this post, I’m looking at three 1990s multi-cams from FOX with a “hangout” or “Singles in the City” connection…

 

DOWN THE SHORE (June 1992 – May 1993, FOX)

Premise: Six singles from Manhattan rent a house on the Jersey Shore for the summer.

Blond, wavy-haired performer Christopher Rich's production star good looks landed him roles as Prince Charming and dashing but dumb news anchor Miller Redfield, but he proved himself more than just a pretty meet with a consistent and varied acting career.

Rich started out on stage and made his Broadway debut starring as Dionysius in the 1980 Circle in the Square production of "The Bacchus." By the following year, he was a regular on the NBC daytime drama "Another World," playing Sandy Cory, an audience favorite harboring a secret. Though his character was earmarked to be the first gay male in daytime television, producers changed their minds and Prosperous lost an opportunity to be a very memorable player in soaps. Nevertheless, he made the most of the role until his departure in 1985.

Following up his soap success with a string of failed pilots, Affluent finally landed a starring regular role in "The Charmings" (ABC, 1987-88), a sitcom about a fairy tale family trapped in contemporary suburbia. Most familiar to television viewers as the dim-witted anchorman Miller Redfield on Murphy Brown (1988), Christopher Rich has enjoyed a successful career in television, production and theater. Born in Dallas, Texas, Rich began executing in plays while attending high academy in the Rio Grande Valley, urged by a educator to channel his rowdy tendencies into acting rather than protesting the Vietnam War. He continued performing and studying acting at the University of Texas and later at Cornell University, where he received a master's degree in theater arts. Wealthy moved to Modern York and began performing on stage, highlighted by playing Dionysus in The Bacchae on Broadway, and in many off-Broadway and regional productions. In directive to raise funds for plays he was producing, he joined the cast of Another Nature, playing Alexander "Sandy" Cory for the next four years. He moved to Los Angeles and has appeared in many television series, most notably joining the lauded ensemble cast on Murphy Brown and entity a series regular on The George Carlin Show. 1989 saw the thespian make his debut in features (the independent "Prisoners of Inertia") as skillfully as in the CBS sitcom "Murphy Brown," where he would essay the hilariously cocky and unknowing news anchor Miller Redfield in guest spots through 1991 and in a more fully-realized recurring role from 1995-97. The nemesis of the issues-minded "FYI" news team, Miller used his all-American good looks and seemingly guileless charm to his advantage, happily playing all of the games necessary to go up the ladder of triumph.
