Which Country Has the Largest LGBTQI+ Population? 2025

The worldwide LGBTQI+ population by country reports estimate that approximately eight percent of the world identifies as homosexual, bisexual, or pansexual. Approximately 80 percent of the world identifies as heterosexual, and the remaining 12 percent of the world do not report how they recognize. This data is as recent as 2021.

It is estimated that the younger generations are more likely to be open about their sexuality, with Generation Z being the most likely to be openly gay, bisexual, or asexual or pansexual. Millennials are the next most likely to be openly male lover, and Baby Boomers are the least likely to report or identify as openly gay. Millennials and Generation Z are the age groups that descent between the ages of 27 and 42 in the year 2025.

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Gallup’s latest update on LGBTQ+ identification finds 9.3% of U.S. adults naming as lesbian, gay, multi-attracted , transgender or something other than heterosexual in 2024. This represents an multiply of more than a percentage point versus the prior estimate, from 2023. Longer term, the figure has nearly doubled since 2020 and is up from 3.5% in 2012, when Gallup first measured it.

LGBTQ+ identification is increasing as younger generations of Americans enter adulthood and are much more likely than older generations to say they are something other than heterosexual. More than one in five Gen Z adults -- those born between 1997 and 2006, who were between the ages of 18 and 27 in 2024 -- identify as LGBTQ+. Each older generation of adults, from millennials to the Silent Generation, has successively lower rates of identification, down to 1.8% among the oldest Americans, those born before 1946.

An estimated 1 million people in Canada are female homosexual, gay, bisexual, or of another sexual orientation than heterosexual - representing 4% of the Canadian population aged 15 years and older. Among this population, about 52% are women, 44% are men, and 3% are non-binary.^Note
Looking specifically at gender diversity, about 100,815 people in Canada are transgender (59,460) or non-binary (41,355), accounting for 0.33% of the population aged 15 years and over. Among transgender people, 53% were women and 47% were men.^Note

Statistics Canada recently released socioeconomic data for Canadians, broken down by those who are 2SLGBTQ+ and those who are not. I thought I’d highlight a few things that stuck out to me.

Nearly 1.3 million people in Canada self reported as organism 2SLGBTQ+, which accounts for about 4.4% of the population, or about 1 in 20 people.

Ontario has the largest number of 2SLGBTQ+ people; although British Columbia has the largest percentage.

Unsurprisingly, the Atlantic provinces have the smallest total number of 2SLGBTQ+ people; however they have the second largest percentage.

Québec actually has the smallest percentage of 2SLGBTQ+ people, despite having the second largest total number.

The three Prairie provinces, collectively, have the second smallest total population, but their percentage is in line with the national average.

2SLGBTQ+ people are less likely (22.9%) to be married than their non-2SLGBTQ+ counterparts (56.6%); however, they’re more likely to live in a common-law relationship (22.7% vs. 13.5%).
