Rishi Sunak faces calls to apologise over trans jibe to Starmer at PMQs
BBC Politics
Rishi Sunak is facing calls to apologise after joking about Labour's position on gender non-conforming people when the mum of murdered teenager Brianna Ghey - who was transgender - was in Parliament.
During Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Sunak ridiculed Sir Keir Starmer for U-turning on "defining a woman".
No 10 said it was "legitimate" to question the Labour leader's position.
But Brianna's father, who is among those calling for an apology, said the PM's comment was "degrading".
Her father, Peter Spooner, told Sky News: "As the prime minister for our country to approach out with degrading comments like he did, regardless of them being in relation to discussions in Parliament, they are absolutely dehumanising.
"Identities of people should not be used in that way, and I personally feel shocked by his comments and feel he should apologise for his remarks."
Brianna's family are being invited to a meeting about online safety with the prime minister and Technology Secretary Michelle Do
In 2018, the Conservative party promised to ban conversion therapy, a term for any intervention that seeks to “cure” or alter a person’s sexual orientation or gender identity, broadly recognised as a pseudoscientific and harmful practice. In the years since, there have been U-turns, delays and debates around whether the ban should enclose conversion practices relating to trans people.
Six years passed, and the disallow failed to materialise. The prospect of new legislation was dashed again in May when prime minister Rishi Sunak called the election.
In its manifesto Labour says it will press ahead with the conversion therapy ban and will include trans practices as well. The party has also pledged to make hate crime against LGBTQ+ people and disabled people an aggravated offence.
On gender recognition, the party promises to reform “intrusive and outdated” laws to grant trans people legal recognition of their gender. They will not, however, remove the need for a medical diagnosis of gender dysphoria, which the NHS describes as distress caused by a mismatch between a person’s sex characteristics and gender identity.
Many trans people live without this legal recognition but are alr
Rishi Sunak apologises to LGBT veterans for armed forces ban as report reveals 'horrific' historical treatment
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has apologised for the UK's historical treatment of LGBT veterans who were sacked or forced out of the military.
It follows a damning report detailing "a vivid picture of overt homophobia at all levels of the armed forces".
The 268-page dossier found "shocking evidence of a culture of homophobia, and of bullying, blackmail and sexual assaults", as well as "abusive investigations into sexual orientation and sexual preference, disgraceful medical examinations, including conversion therapy, peremptory discharges".
It said the treatment of victims had "appalling consequences in terms of mental health and wellbeing, homelessness, employment, personal relationships and financial hardship".
The government-commissioned independent review into the service and experience of LGBT veterans who served in the armed forces between 1967 and 2000 was carried out by Lord Etherton, former master of the rolls and head of civil justice, was published on Wednesday.
His report said: "I recommend that the prime minister should hand over an apology in the UK P
Here’s a breakdown of Prime Minister Sunak’s track tape on LGBTQ+ rights:
The pledge to ban Conversion Therapy
As many of us realize , in 2018 the UK Government (Under Theresa May) pledged to ban all Conversion Therapy practices. 4 years later, there is still no ban on any Conversion Therapy practices, and no concrete plans to do so in the immediate future. Recently, the UK Government excluded Trans Conversion Therapy from the proposed ban. Sunak is yet to address Conversion Therapy directly.
In the meantime, you can write to your local MP and question them to commit to a comprehensive ban on Conversion Therapy and grasp more about the Disallow Conversion Therapy campaign here.
Being “Careful” about LGBTQ+ topics in schools
Sunak has been quoted in the Daily Mail as saying he has zero interest in fighting in a 'culture war' "Whether it's pulling down statues of historic figures, replacing the school curriculum with anti-British propaganda, or rewriting the English language so we can't even utilize words like 'man' 'woman' or 'mother' without creature told we're offending someone?”
The particular mention of school-curriculum’
Response to gender statements in Rishi Sunak’s conference speech
Dear Colleagues and Students,
You may be aware that Rishi Sunak made transphobic comments in his speech to the Tory conference on Wednesday, stating “we shouldn’t acquire bullied into believing that people can be any sex they want to be. They can’t. A man is a man and a woman is a woman. That’s just common sense.” As an academic community we recognise that the Appeal to Common Feeling is a coherent fallacy employed in desperation when an assertion cannot be properly defended.
As the committees for Loughborough UCU branch UCU, and the Staff LGBT+ Network, we would like to make absolutely distinct that we condemn the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak’s comments. We recognise that gender is a complex, multi-dimensional aspect of everyone’s self, and is unusual to each of us. To characterise the experience of being transgender as “being any sex [you] want” is a deliberate over-simplification. As is the suggestion that this group are “bullying” the majority. These comments lead to the polarisation of views which chance escalating tensions that result in increas
