Doctor Strange 2 Merch Confirms Another Queer Hero Is Headed to the MCU

A piece of official merchandise for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness seemingly confirms Marvel hero America Chavez's LGBTQ+ identity will be represented in the film.

The merch, listed as officially licensed for the upcoming Marvel Studios motion picture, popped up on Amazon. Long-sleeve, short-sleeve and hoodie versions of the shirt are available, each depicting the same print: a new version of Chavez's ever-present denim jacket from the comics. Along with its signature American flag imagery, the jacket -- which can only be seen from the front -- displays a Mexican Day of the Expired sugar skull patch, an LGBTQ+ pride flag pin and some phrases in Spanish, one of which translates to "love is love." The expression is generally paired with the Homosexual pride movement. The pin and expression appear to indicate Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness will retain Chavez's lesbian identity, extended established in the comics.

Marvel executive Victoria Alonso has commented on Doctor Strange 2 ethics America Chavez's LGBTQ self, confirming that the feature will be sticking to that detail from the comics.

"[America] is a young Latina who is part of the LGBTQ+ community, and has great power," Alonso said in a new interview with Marvel.com. "Children crave to see themselves represented. There is this level of identity that comes to be a very important moment in an adolescent's life – to see themselves; to not be invisible."

Doctor Strange sequel reportedly banned overseas for inclusion of queer character

Following in the steps of fellow Disney productions West Side Story and Eternals, the upcoming Marvel Studios film Surgeon Strange in the Multiverse of Madness has been banned in Saudi Arabia, reports The Hollywood Reporter.

According to The Hollywood Journalist, the ban is consistent with homosexuality being illegal in the Gulf region. As a result, films that merely include LGBTQ characters often get banned in certain countries in the area. While reviewers have not yet seen Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, the film does introduce the Marvel Comics character America Chavez, who is male lover in the source material.

While there’s not much indication as to how America (played in the motion picture by Xochitl Gomez) will be depicted in Multiverse of Madness or how closely she’ll resemble her comic book counterpart, the character has long been depicted as simply creature out and proud. It’s a refreshing and nonchalant approach to representation — especially compared to the rest of her backstory, which is heavily retconned and involves multiple universes.

None of that necessarily means America’s queerness will

The “Doctor Strange” sequel hasn’t released yet or been reviewed, but the film does hold a new gay ethics, America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), who is likewise queer in the comic books.

Disney had no comment.

While some Middle Eastern countries own been known to not play films for a variety of reasons, including intimacy, violence or sexuality, homosexuality is officially illegal in Saudi Arabia, and LGBTQ issues in films have often been an issue for censors in the region.

Specifically, the forbid of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” comes on the heels of Saudi Arabia also blocking the release of Marvel’s “Eternals,” which...

Disney Refuses to Detach LGBTQ Scene From Doctor Strange 2

America Chavez, a traits portrayed in the film by Xochitl Gomez, is openly gay in the comics.
